Railway OT Cybersecurity according to IEC63452 and TS50701

Gain a practical understanding of railway cybersecurity through this 12-module online course based on IEC 63452 and TS 50701. Learn how to identify cyber threats, assess risks, implement security controls, and support compliance throughout the railway system lifecycle, helping to build safer and more resilient rail operations.

What's included?

  • 12 Modules (6-week online course)

A structured 12-module programme built module-by-module on IEC 63452 and TS 50701 - from threat landscape through to software security and conclusions.
  • Practical activities in every module

Hands-on exercises throughout, including zone modelling, risk assessment, and incident response - designed to help you apply the standard, not just read it.
  • Full lifecycle + internationally relevant standards

Covers the full railway lifecycle (concept to operations, maintenance and decommissioning), plus key frameworks like IEC 62443, ISO 27001, NIS2 and NIST.
Instructor

Howard Parkinson

Howard Parkinson has worked at the intersection of rail safety, operational technology (OT), and cybersecurity for more than 25 years. He holds a PhD in Engineering from the University of Manchester and is a chartered professional, with a career focused on helping rail organizations understand risk, meet evolving standards, and improve cyber resilience across safety-critical systems.

As Director of Digital Transit Limited, Howard leads the work behind this course, bringing practical experience from real-world rail and critical infrastructure environments. His teaching blends engineering discipline with clear, applied guidance, so learners can confidently translate IEC 63452 and related requirements into workable governance, processes, and technical controls.
Instructor

Dan Basher

Dan Basher is the CTO at Digital Transit, with a strong focus on process and practical delivery. His work sits at the intersection of engineering, supplier delivery, and operational assurance, and he is always looking for ways to turn complex requirements into clear, repeatable ways of working.

In this course, Dan brings a hands-on engineering and supplier perspective, with particular focus on how cyber security standards translate into real projects. In the modules covering standards and lifecycle integration, he emphasizes how to plan, design, implement, and maintain controls across the full lifecycle - from requirements and architecture through commissioning, change control, and ongoing assurance.
